Terms & Conditions

Chapter is operated by Chapter Technologies Limited (Companies House No. 14743161), registered at 2 Marston Brook, Hilton, Derbyshire DE65 5HS, United Kingdom (“we”, “our”, “us”). These Terms govern your use of the Chapter app and related services (the “Service”). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms.

Your use is also subject to our Privacy Policy.

1. 2.1 You must be at least 16 years old to use the Service.
2. 2.2 If you misrepresent your age, we may suspend or terminate your account.

1. 3.1 Keep credentials confidential; you are responsible for all activity on your account.
2. 3.2 Do not impersonate others or provide false information.
3. 3.3 Notify us promptly of suspected unauthorised use or security incidents.

You agree not to use the Service to:

1. 4.1 Violate laws or third-party rights.
2. 4.2 Harass, threaten, bully, or promote hate or violence (including toward other players or NPCs in Chapter World).
3. 4.3 Post obscene, sexually explicit, or exploitative content (especially involving minors), including in avatar designs, dorm customisation, chats, or NPC interactions.
4. 4.4 Disseminate malware or attempt to compromise security or integrity.
5. 4.5 Send spam, unauthorised promotions, or multi-level marketing material.
6. 4.6 Doxx or disclose others’ personal data without consent.
7. 4.7 Cheat, exploit bugs, use bots or automation, or manipulate game mechanics (XP, levels, coins, quests, leaderboards).
8. 4.8 Abuse AI NPCs, including prompt injection, jailbreak attempts, spamming, or trying to extract system prompts or training data.

1. 5.1 Ownership. You retain ownership of content you submit (“UGC”). UGC includes posts, messages, photos, comments, ratings, and in-game creations (avatar configurations, dorm customisation and pinboards, NPC chats, and any files you upload to NPCs such as CVs or personal statements).
2. 5.2 Licence. You grant Chapter Technologies Limited a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable and sublicensable licence to host, store, reproduce, display, adapt, and moderate UGC solely to operate, provide, improve, and secure the Service, including processing content through our AI providers to generate NPC responses and feature outputs.
3. 5.3 Responsibility. You are responsible for your UGC and must have the necessary rights. Do not upload third-party personal data (e.g., a CV containing a referee's details) without consent.
4. 5.4 Takedowns. We may remove UGC that violates these Terms or law.
5. 5.5 Feedback. You grant us a perpetual, irrevocable licence to use feedback you submit.
6. 5.6 AI Outputs. Responses generated by AI NPCs or other AI features are produced by third-party models. Outputs may be inaccurate, incomplete, or unsuitable and must not be relied on as professional (academic, legal, medical, or financial) advice.

All rights in the Service - software, code, design, logos, text, graphics, game assets (avatar bases, wardrobe items, pets, NPC characters, sprites, zones, music, and animations), and datasets (courses, universities, accommodation, societies, events) - are owned by Chapter Technologies Limited or its licensors. Except as expressly permitted, you may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, or create derivative works.

1. 7.1 Scraping/Crawling. You must not scrape, crawl, spider, harvest, or use automated means to access, query, or copy the Service or datasets without our written consent.
2. 7.2 Reverse Engineering. You must not reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or attempt to derive source code, underlying databases, game internals, or non-public APIs.
3. 7.3 Competitive Use. You must not use the Service, game content, or AI outputs to build, train, or benchmark competing products or create derivative databases.
4. 7.4 Circumvention. You must not bypass rate limits, access controls, paywalls, or other restrictions.
5. 7.5 Game Automation. You must not use bots, scripts, macros, memory editors, or modified clients to play, farm XP/coins, manipulate leaderboards, or alter game state.
6. 7.6 AI Misuse. You must not attempt to jailbreak AI NPCs, extract system prompts, probe for training data, or use NPC interactions to generate content that violates these Terms or the AI provider's policies.

The Service may include clearly-labelled sponsored placements or featured listings (e.g., universities, accommodation providers, student businesses). We do not currently serve personalised advertising. If we do in future, we will comply with applicable law and obtain required consent.

1. 9.1 You must provide accurate information when claiming roles.
2. 9.2 We may request verification and revoke claims we cannot verify.

We may review, remove, restrict, or refuse content that violates these Terms or law and may disable or terminate accounts for repeated or severe violations.

1. 11.1 Virtual Currency. Chapter World includes an in-game currency (“Coins”) and virtual items (avatar wardrobe, pets and pet accessories, dorm décor, cosmetics) earned through gameplay, quests, or otherwise awarded. Coins and items have no monetary value and cannot be redeemed, withdrawn, exchanged for real money, or transferred to other users outside official in-game mechanics.
2. 11.2 Licence, Not Ownership. Coins and virtual items are licensed to you for personal, non-commercial in-game use. We may adjust balances, prices, drop rates, levels required, or availability; items may be modified, rebalanced, expire, or be removed at any time.
3. 11.3 Progress & Resets. Game progress (XP, levels, quest completions, skills, pathways, dorm state) may be reset, corrected, or recalculated where necessary (e.g., fraud prevention, bug fixes, seasonal resets).
4. 11.4 Termination & Deletion. Coins, items, and progress are forfeit if your account is terminated for violations of these Terms or deleted by you. We do not provide refunds or compensation for lost virtual items.
5. 11.5 Paid Purchases (If Any). If we introduce paid purchases, purchases via the Apple App Store are processed by Apple. We do not store payment card details. Pricing, taxes, refunds, and subscriptions are governed by App Store terms and applicable law.
6. 11.6 Sponsored Items & Marketplace. Chapter World may include clearly labelled branded shops or items; visits and rewards associated with partner content may be tracked (see Privacy Policy).

1. 12.1 Third-Party AI. Chapter World includes AI-powered NPCs (e.g., Chappy, and other career/skills guides). Your messages to NPCs - including any attachments you upload (e.g., CVs, personal statements, images, PDFs) - are sent to and processed by our AI provider (currently Anthropic) to generate responses.
2. 12.2 Not Professional Advice. NPC responses are informational only, may be inaccurate or incomplete, and are not a substitute for qualified academic, careers, legal, medical, or financial advice. Verify anything important independently.
3. 12.3 Safe Use. Do not share unnecessary sensitive personal data with NPCs. Do not upload content you do not have rights to, or that contains third-party personal data without consent. Do not use NPCs to generate content that violates these Terms or applicable AI provider policies.
4. 12.4 Session Storage. NPC chats and attachments may be stored so you can return to previous conversations. You can delete sessions via the app; see our Privacy Policy for retention and deletion details.
5. 12.5 Availability. AI features depend on third-party providers and may be rate-limited, temporarily unavailable, changed, or discontinued without notice.

The Service may link to or integrate third-party platforms (e.g., ticketing, accommodation, AI providers, mapping, analytics). We are not responsible for their content, terms, or policies. Use them at your discretion.

1. 14.1 We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation.
2. 14.2 We may modify, suspend, or discontinue features or the Service (including Chapter World, AI NPCs, or virtual items) at any time.

1. 15.1 The Service is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties (express or implied).
2. 15.2 Information (e.g., course or accommodation data) and AI-generated content (e.g., NPC responses, career suggestions) are for general guidance; verify with official providers or qualified professionals.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Chapter Technologies Limited shall not be liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages, or lost profits/data/goodwill. Our total liability shall not exceed the amount you paid (if any) for the Service during the 12 months preceding the claim.

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Chapter Technologies Limited and its affiliates, officers, employees, and agents from claims, damages, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use of the Service or violation of these Terms.

We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service immediately for violations of these Terms, legal requirements, or conduct harmful to users or the Service. You may stop using the Service at any time.

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. You submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

1. 20.1 Territorial Scope. The Service focuses on UK universities and is available globally, subject to local laws.
2. 20.2 Export/Sanctions. You represent you are not subject to embargoes/sanctions and will not use the Service in violation of export control or sanctions laws.

We shall not be liable for delays or failures due to events beyond our reasonable control, including natural disasters, strikes, war, terrorism, civil disorder, internet or hosting failures, power outages, or government actions.

If any provision of these Terms is held invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect.

These Terms constitute the entire agreement between you and Chapter Technologies Limited regarding the Service and supersede prior or contemporaneous agreements on the same subject.

You may not assign or transfer rights or obligations under these Terms without our prior written consent. We may assign these Terms in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be notified in-app or by email. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance.
